Understanding COBie

Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBie) is a non-proprietary data format for the publication of a subset of BIM information, focused on delivering asset data in non-geometric form. This may sound complex, but the principles of COBie are straight forward.

Duration: 3 hours

Schedule: Flexible to suit your needs

COBie is a clear format for delivering assets’ data. It is typically a spreadsheet file with some rules on the structuring and content of the provided data. The COBie spreadsheet contains several tabs which list information on the assets facilities, floors, spaces, systems, installed equipment, documents etc. Every entry in the worksheet is connected with another one from another worksheet. It is intended to work as a convenient reference on information that is otherwise hidden in the large amount of drawings and files generated on a project.

This Understanding COBie training course will cover how key information is presented in a COBie format and how it can influence different aspects of the project. This course takes a hands-on approach to how COBie works, demonstrated through case studies and live projects.

This course will be delivered live by your BIM Academy instructor over our virtual learning platform.

Who should attend this course?

This Understanding COBie training course covers strategic considerations, management and implementation, therefore is intended for those managing the project from client, through to designer and contractor.

Any project team member who wants to understand what information is required by COBie and who is responsible to provide it should attend this course.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Introduction to COBie.
  2. What is COBie and how is it used.
  3. Outline of ISO 19650.
  4. How COBie fits within ISO 19650 procedures.
  5. COBie in detail: what do all those spreadsheet tabs mean?
  6. How COBie can be created: software exports and merging COBie files.
  7. How COBie fits in with the Digital Plan of Work and Uniclass.
  8. How to ensure your data requirements are met.
  9. Verification, checking your data requirements are delivered.
  10. Learn from practical examples and case studies.

Key Takeaways

You will learn the difference between documentation and data. As well as how COBie can influence the exchange of information (recorded) at a management level, plus gain a detailed understanding of what is COBie, how to manage it effectively as well as how to apply to your own BIM-led projects.

Certification

On completion of this course, you will be awarded a BIM Academy BIM-training certificate, accredited in association with Northumbria University.
